Healthy Water - Points to Consider
We have such a wide choice when it comes to what water to drink. In fact the choice is even wider than this - do we drink water or juice or pop etc. The choice we make is very important to our health because 60% of our body mass is made up of water.
Chlorine
We are told that in Canada we have the best tap water in the world. This maybe so, however I live in Richmond BC and I do regular tests on the water coming out of my tap and I find that it still contains large quantities of chlorine. This is because chlorine is a highly efficient disinfectant and kills off many of the nasties that otherwise might kill us off. Unfortunately chlorine can also be toxic to us, and can be a component in causing eczema, asthma, bladder cancer, birth defects and even miscarriages. So it seems like it would be a good idea to filter this chlorine out before we drink it or shower in it. The toxic fumes we inhale when we shower in unfiltered tap water can be very harmful to our health, not to mention the toxins that we absorb through our skin. If you take a glass of tap water and test it for chlorine content and then put two fingers in the tap water and swish them around and retest, you will find that the chlorine content of the water will be gone after the finger swishing. It will all have been absorbed into your body. The same happens with fruit that you wash in tap water - it absorbs all the chlorine - and then you eat it.
pH Level
Your pH level shows you the big picture of your body's health. Moving to a healthful pH range of 6.4 to 7.0 is critical (lower the number, the more acidic).
My regular testing of tap water finds it usually to be fairly acidic (below 7.0 and sometimes below 6.0). Most bottled water (except natural spring water and specially treated alkaline water) is acidic and pop is extremely acidic.
Cancer and pH
Harmful virus and bacteria thrive in an acid (low oxygen) environment. Otto Warburg won the Nobel Prize in 1931 for proving that cancer needs an oxygen free environment in order to thrive. When you increase the pH of your body's tissues, harmful pathogens cannot survive. By moving your pH into the "feel good" balanced pH range, you should experience a significant improvement in your energy, flexibility, mental alertness and overall mood.
To understand why some tissues in the body are deficient in oxygen and therefore prone to cancer, it is helpful to understand the nature of acidity and alkalinity. Cancerous tissues are acidic, whereas healthy tissues are alkaline. Water (H2O) decomposes into H+ and OH-. When a solution contains more H+ than OH- then it is said to be acid. When it contains more OH- than H+ then it is said to be alkaline.
When oxygen enters an acid solution it can combine with H+ ions to form water. Oxygen helps to neutralize the acid, while at the same time the acid prevents oxygen from reaching the tissues that need it. Acidic tissues are devoid of free oxygen.
An alkaline solution is just the reverse. Two hydroxyl ions (OH-) can combine to produce one water molecule and one oxygen atom. In other words, an alkaline solution can provide oxygen to the tissues.
The pH scale goes from 0 to 14, with 7 being neutral. Below 7 is acid and above 7 is alkaline. The blood, lymph and cerebral spinal fluid in the human body are designed to be slightly alkaline at a pH of 7.4.
At a pH slightly above 7.4 cancer cells become dormant and at pH 8.5 cancer cells will dieT while healthy cells will live (Barefoot, pages 66-67). This has given rise to a variety of treatments based on increasing the alkalinity of the tissues such as vegetarian diet, the drinking of fresh fruit and vegetable juices, and dietary supplementation with alkaline minerals such as calcium, potassium, magnesium, cesium and rubidium.
