 Hangover 

Problem:    Hangover

 

The chemical action of alcoholl in the body dehydrates the body and depletets its store of vitaminA, B (particularly B6), C and potassium while at the same time manufcturing toxins.

 

 

Recommended Solutions

 

Bananas help replace the lost potassium which you need to keep the body fluids balanced and magnesium which helps control blood sugar levels and vitamin C

 

Vitamin B Complex to replenish the lost reserves and help to clear alcohol from the blood

 

Milk Thistle : take two pills with a glass of water before bed... or in the morning if you forget

This has been shown in trials to regenerate damaged liver cells.

 

N-acetyl-cysteine. This is one of the building blocks of a natural compound called glutathione which cleans the body of toxins from alcohol and cigarette smoke. Ironically, when you drink, you lower levels of this nutrient. So, building it up again is a good idea.

A study by New Scientist magazine showed NAC to be the top hangover remedy.

N-acetyl-cysteine is found naturally in raw eggs.

 

Drink green tea (for its anti-oxidant properties) and lots of water.

 

 

Preventative measures

 

Fat-protein snacks, such as milk or cheese, should decrease alcohol absorption and thus help reduce drunkenness and hangovers.

 

Some people drink a little olive oil before parties to coat their stomachs so that they can handle their drinking better.   A few capsules of evening primrose oil may also help.

 

A little After Buzz in a glass of water sipped throughout the evening should help prevent dehydration and the resulting headache.

 

All of the above recommended solutions can also be taken beforehand to mininmize the damage.

 

 

If you have particularly bad hangovers it could be and indication that you are allergic to some of the ingredients, such as corn, wheat, barley, or yeast or that your liver is not in good condition.  For the latter I would recommend a course of St Francis Farm Milk Thistle Combo or you can take 1 or 2 of the Swiss Milk Thistle tablets daily.  Consult your health care practitioner if you suspect that you may have any liver problems.
